History of the Tunkhannock Interact Club
The Tunkhannock High School Interact Club was sponsored by the Tunkhannock Rotary Club, organized on Dec 12, 2000 and chartered on March 1, 2001 during Jeannie Brady’s year as President. Interact’s name is a combination of “international” and “action.” Interact clubs are sponsored by Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting. Each Interact Club requires a teacher as a Club Advisor and a Club Rotarian as a mentor. Interact clubs are encouraged to organize at least two service project a year: one that benefits their community and one that encourages international understanding.
The first Interact Club Advisor was teacher Elaine Walker and 2000-2001 Club President Jeannie Brady served as the first Club mentor. The current Interact Club Advisor is Tommasina Fiorillo, a teacher in the Foreign Language Department. In 2014, she was made a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of her excellent service to the Interact Club. Tommasina was also made an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Tunkhannock by the Board of Directors to honor her for her outstanding service as Club Advisor. Rotarian Marta Kovacs-Ruiz was one of the long-time Club mentors until she turned that honor over to Laura Charles (a former teacher at the High school). So. Laura Charles and Dave Wilson are the current Club mentors.
