In early 2024, Rotarian District Attorney Joseph Peters asked the Tunkhannock Rotary to expand its community outreach and advertising for the DTB to a NARCAN distribution program.

From 2015 through 2021, 54 residents have died from an accidental drug overdose according to https://www.overdosefreepa.org/know-the-facts/view-overdose-death-data/. Of those 54 overdoses, 64.81% were caused by fentanyl alone. NARCAN nasal spray has been approved by the FDA as an over-the-counter opioid overdose treatment and saves lives.  DA Peters obtained a supply of NARCAN for use in a free distribution program.

This program will make NARCAN available to residents of Wyoming County through several advertised distribution events each year.  The Tunkhannock Rotary will orchestrate the community outreach for these events.

On Sunday May 19, the Wyoming County District Attorney Joseph Peters hosted a Narcan Drive-thru event with the assistance of the Community Awareness Group.  This Group was formed by the DA, and includes: Tunkhannock Rotary, Wyoming County Human Services, Wyoming County Chamber of Commerce, Dietrich Theater, Wyoming County Community Health Foundation, Tunkhannock Area School District, Tunkhannock Business & Professional Women, and the Wyoming County Commissioners.

Over 80 boxes of Narcan were distributed at the May 19 event with many more boxes distributed post event through continuing community outreach.

At least 1 additional Narcan distribution will take place in 2024.
