Rotary Facts:

The guiding principles of Rotary (Object of Rotary and 4-Way Test) have been developed over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. They serve as a foundation for our relationships with each other and the action we take in the world.[1]

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
·        FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
·        SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity              to serve society;
·        THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
·        FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

HOBY

The HOBY gathering was May 17 – May 22.

The top 10% of their class was invited to apply.  They wrote an essay on their leadership qualities and the winners were selected.

Emily talked about the first day at HOBY where they assessed their leadership skills.  The gathering was big on cheers, they learned at least 1 per day.  They did a Rooks and Tooks activity. They learned how to communicate with each other with a language barrier. Each day ended with group time and talk about their favorite activities.

Elizabeth - On Friday, they went to Harrisburg Capital building and heard from a former HOBY Ambassador, Rep. Kate Klunk, who is in the legislature.  They were divided into groups and into minority and majority parties and considered different laws.  They had a mock legislative session in the house and voted on the proposed laws.

The food was very good.

On Sat, they went out into the community to do service work.

Emily’s group worked with the Friends of Midtown Harrisburg. They heard from multiple speakers including the Mayor. There are 16 wall murals in downtown, and she got to see some of them on her work detail. They split into 2 groups: 1 cleaned and weeded the park. Group 2 (her group) went with kids that have barrel planters around Harrisburg. They cleaned them out and planted flowers.

Elizabeth did a service project with the Boys and Girls Club of Harrisburg.  They do a lot of programs with little money.  Planet Fitness partnering with B&G and putting in new gyms, so they clear out the old equipment and tidied up the facilities.

They then wrote thank you letters to people who helped with or sponsored HOBY activities.

They had a Panel on The Role of Business as community leaders and then a talk about “Finding Your Passion Through Leadership Services”.

Sunday was a wrap up and life after HOBY.  They were challenged to do 100 hr of service in the year following their HOBY to win awards for different levels of service.

They felt that the best part was the service projects and meeting kids from other parts of the state.
