Exchange Students
Matesh Kurkani was an inbound exchange student from India 37 years ago and was hosted by the Cubeks, Otto Kyle and Starks.  He and his wife are both Rotarians.  He has come back several times to visit.  Don and Jean Sick took him to Niagara Falls and other places.
When he went back to India, he got his MBA in Finance and started his own non-banking finance company.  He also owns a construction company that builds and sells condominiums in India.
They have 2 daughters. His 24 yr old daughter is a lawyer and member of the bar in India. They are flying into Ottowa, where she is pursuing further studies.  Their youngest daughter won a scholarship at Wheaton College in MA, where they have visited.
He has wonderful memories of his time in Tunkhannock and encouraged the current exchange students to make the most of their time here.

Committee Reports:
2019 Harvest and Wine Festival Committee:
The next Meeting will be Monday evening Sept 9 at 6 pm at the Tunkhannock Library.
Ann Way has dropped off the tickets at the local sites, so we can now advertise that tickets are available for local purchase.
Sponsorships for Wine Festival Packets were given out to the people involved. Includes: cover letter that needs to be signed by solicitor, already signed by Sandy.
Frank Oliver suggested that we re-write the letter for next year to focus on the good that we do with the moneys. The package includes a chart with what we give to charities and talks about the Festival planning starting in Jan.  Frank will be available to talk about how to do this in the best way possible for next year’s Festival sponsorship solicitations.
Posters and rack cards are now available. If you take them to sites, please let Ron know where you have taken them to avoid duplication of efforts.
District News:
See the Aug District newsletter for information on the various events and activities happening in District 7410. Please support our fellow Rotarians at other clubs in our District for their fun upcoming activities/events.

Our next Meeting will be Thursday, Sept 5 and our guest speaker will be our Inbound Exchange Student from Ecuador, Alejandra (Ale) Carolina Vizcaino–Ruiz.
Prior to adjournment, Mike Markovitz led the recitation of the 4-Way Test by the attendees.
President Sandra Lane adjourned the meeting at 1:30 PM.

Hamburg & Rotary International Convention
Norm attended the 2019 RI Convention in Hamburg Germany. The Convention badge was recognized for free transportation around the city.  There were approximately 26,500 people in attendance.
Hamburg was wiped out in the war and this is mostly a new city.  The Conference was on the waterfront with the Endo Polio Flag flying in the harbor. There was a 2.3 mile walking tunnel under the harbor.  He and Marcia visited the beautiful Botanical Gardens.
The RI Convention was split over several buildings. Pres. Ian Riseley brought Rotaract into RI.  Toastmasters and Rotary have now combined and will teach public speaking to clubs.
This year they are really trying to end polio finally, so everyone marched with their polio t-shirts for 5 miles thru the city.  $50 million has been raised with a $100 million match from the Gates Foundation.
District 7410 Rotary Leaders PDG Karen Breitlauch, PDG Marcia & DGN Joe Loughman, DG Roger Mattes and DGE Karen DeMatteo were all there.
Lots of heart-warming stories were told at the meeting about people who were helped by Rotary or offered help to others. Every speech is on the RI website under the Convention heading if anyone wants to listen to some of the outstanding speakers.
