General Club News – Pres. Samantha Maruzzelli

Everyone had a great time at the Post Holiday social on Saturday.  The Keystone musicians were not able to come due to the weather.  District Governor Karin Breitlauch presented a Club-designated Paul Harris to District Attorney Jeff Mitchell.  She then also presented multiple Paul Harris pins to Tom Kukuchka (PHF +7) and John Proctor (PHF +1).

Pres. Samantha reminded everyone that there would be a Flash meeting at Shadowbrook at 5:15 PM today.

Thank You Notes

The Club received thank you notes from Interfaith Friends for the $1,300 from Candy Cane Day.

Thank you from Rotary Exchange Student host family Angie and John Burke for our Xmas gift to them.

Thank you from the Wyoming County Chorale for our donation of $200. We received 4 free tickets to their next concert.

Thank you from the Northern Tier Symphony Orchestra for the donation of $250.

Thank you from the Tunkhannock Tree Association for our donation of 10 shade trees in honor of our Rotarian veterans.  They consider our donation as a generous gift to the environmental health of Tunkhannock.

We also received an invitation to the Graduation of the Wyoming/Sullivan County Treatment Court at the Triton Hose Company on Jan 18 at 5 PM.

GEM 104 Rotary Ad on Placemats – Ron Furman

GEM 104 contacted Ron regarding having an ad for Tunkhannock Rotary on 30,000 placemats used in places like Purkey’s Pink Apple for $250.  Ron, Sam and Carol thought it was a good idea and Carol sent Ron the Tunkhannock Rotary Club logo for them to use on the placement.

Interact Club – Dave Wilson

Interact will be here Feb 1 to tell us about their activities and they have a donation for Polio Plus.

Harvest & Wine Festival - Ron Furman

Our first planning meeting for the 2018 Festival will be on Monday Feb 5 at 6 PM at the Tunkhannock Public Library.

Grant’s Management Seminar – Pres. Samantha Maruzzelli

The next District Grant’s Management Seminar is Feb 3 at the Towanda Country Club. President Elect Mike Markovitz, Norm Kelly and Pres. Sam Maruzzelli plan to attend.  The seminar is open to anyone who would like to know about the District and Global Grants from the Rotary Foundation.

Our next Meeting will be Thursday, Jan 25. Our guest speaker will be TASD Superintendent Heather MacPherson who will provide TASD Consolidation Update.

President Samantha Maruzzelli adjourned the meeting at 1:30 PM.

Rotary Moments from Club Members:

He was nominated and approved to join Kiwanis, but no one notified him and in the meantime, he joined Rotary. In those days, the Club raised money with an auction that was an incredible amount of work for the members both before and after the event.  They also tried a Country and Western event that fizzled.

Rotary spearheaded several community projects such as the lights at Memorial Stadium and changing rooms at the Stadium.

In those days, District Conferences were very well attended.  Tunkhannock always had a great hospitality room at Conference with root beer, strawberries and choc fountains.  Legend says that people loved it so much, they sometimes did not make it to sessions, although Tommy maintained that it was not open during the sessions so that was not quite true.

District Conferences were a lot of fun and the one in New York had a toga party with everyone dressing up in sheets. Tommy also chaired the District Conference when Tunkhannock Rotarian Otto Keil was District Governor.

Tunkhannock was a heavy participant in the early years of Exchange students program and Tom chaired the program at one time.

One of his favorite activities was/is the Rotary Relays and he related some humorous incidents that happened at the Relays.

Tommy then offered several ideas for possible future Club projects:
  • Science Fair – we could sponsor the local event and then the kids can go on to the next level.
  • Future Farmers of America – organize a tractor driving demo with cones designating the pathway.
  • Robotics Club at TASD – bring one of the competitions to our area.
Whenever Tommy makes a contribution to the Rotary Foundation, he remembers early photos he saw of a handicapped boy with polio. As a result of everyone seeing these photos, that year the Club raised $28,000 and made 28 Paul Harris Fellows in one swoop by donating to Polio Plus.

Ann Way
Her Top 10 Rotary Moments in Reverse Order with a Tie for No. 3

10.  Meetings at the Prince Hotel, where the tables were in a U-shaped configuration and Fred Kitner would notify the kitchen when it was time to serve lunch.

9.  The first Harvest & Wine Festival meetings where they discussed whether they should purchase complimentary wine glasses.  They decided not to date them, since if it was not very successful, they could use them again the next year.  Ann remembered vividly the one year, the glasses arrived just in the nick of time.

8.  For the first Festival, ticket sales were by phone and used Sandy Lane’s phone number.  It was way too hectic, so they changed the process going forward.

7.  Recently a possible exchange student needed a dental exam as part of their application and Ann asked the club if they knew of anyone who could do it gratis. Within 2 hours, one of our member’s wife scheduled the appointment and did it for free so the student could qualify for the exchange program.

6.  During her first year, she worked as the Rotary Relays chairperson.  She inherited flags, tape measures and a manila envelope with team info from the past.  She really did not know everything that needed to be done for the relays. However, people just jumped in and did what needed to be done without waiting to be asked to do it.

5.  Last Saturday night’s post holiday party was a highlight.  We had a wonderful evening even without the entertainment.  District Governor Karin Breitlauch and her daughter came to join us in spite of the weather.

4.  On Candy Cane Day, you get to know some Rotarians a bit more than usual while you are standing out there in the cold for several hours collecting money.

3.  The event at Ron Furman’s cabin where Fran Turner attempted unsuccessfully to drive his Cadillac up the mountain but ran off the road.

3.  She has great memories with the Exchange students.  For many years, we did events for all the exchange students in the whole district, like a skiing trip, trip to NYC and pizza party.  This is a program that can make a difference re interpersonal relationships among different cultures and peoples.

2.  The Dictionary projects, where we buy and distribute dictionaries to 3rd graders. When she was an elementary school principal, the kids at the start of the school year would ask when they are getting their dictionaries.  Many of their brothers and sisters still had their dictionaries.  They are important, and the kids treasure them.

1.  Ann asked everyone to look around the room since her number 1 Rotary moment was “Right Now”. It is AMAZING to think about what we do locally and in the world.
