Also, if you can come much earlier than that, we need folks to help setup, contact Rod also.   Rain Date is Friday May 10, 2019.

Roadside Cleanup Committee – John Proctor

Saturday, April 27th, 2019 is Spring Road-side Cleanup, so if you volunteered to help with this service project, please remember to report to the Fireplace Restaurant parking lot at 9 AM.  The more volunteers, the shorted the time it will take. So come out for some fresh air, feel good work and great companionship.

Rotary Foundation – Al Noble

Club Foundation Chair Al Noble presented John Hovan with his new Paul Harris (+2) pin. Pres. Mike Markovitz pinned John. Once donations to the Rotary Foundation reach a $1,000 cumulative donation, it earns the donor a Paul Harris.  $1,000 can help educate a person or set up a new business.

District News:

District 7410 Training

The 2020-2021 District Training Workshop will take place Saturday, May 4 from 8 AM to 1 PM at Holiday Inn Wilkes Barre East Mountain, 600 Wild Flower Drive, Wilkes Barre, PA. It is open to all Rotarians as per invitation from DGE Karen DeMatteo.

While the emphasis is giving our incoming Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers their final training to empower them for their year ahead, break-out sessions and an over view from the recent Council on Legislation are informative and useful to all members of our clubs.

The sessions will include...
  • Public Image and how to use the Brand Center on Rotary.org to help clubs promote the People of Action of Campaign in a real and useful way.
  • Inviting all club Foundation Chairs or a representative to take part in shaping our Foundation Committee for the upcoming year.  Including the End Polio Now program, the Foundation Event and District Grant sub-committee.
  • Would you like to learn how to start a community based Interact or Rotaract Club?
  • Table talk session on fundraising
  • President Elect, Secretary and Treasurer breakouts
Come and Connect with your fellow Rotarians!

DGE Karen is putting an emphasis on giving back to our communities while we meet in their midst.  As this meeting is within our Cluster 7 in the District, we are asking everyone attending to please bring ONE or more pair of adult socks to be given to the Keystone Mission in Wilkes Barre.

Brunch will be served as well.  Registration on Saturday May 4th will begin at 8am with opening session at 8:30. The day will end at 1pm with an Aloha farewell!

Our next Meeting will be Thursday, May 2. Our guest speakers will be the Honesdale Interact Club, who will speak about “Fund-raiser Activities Ideas”.

Prior to adjournment, Mary Tempest led the recitation of the 4-Way Test by the attendees.

President Mike Markovitz adjourned the meeting at 1:30 PM.

Guest Speakers:
Shealynn Shave & Debra Tierney
Northern Tier Industry and Education Consortium (NTIEC)

Shealynn Shave is the Executive Director and Debra Tierney is an Educational Coordinator at NTIEC. Bob Barkley & Carrie Bradley are also Educational Coordinators.  They only have 4 part-time staff members, although sometimes they work full-time for part-time salaries.

NTIEC is a 501c3 non-profit formed in 1993, dedicated to promoting school to work activities in NEPA.  They serve 14 school districts in 4 counties. Annually they work with 1,500-2,000 students and 350 employers.

Their goal is to introduce students to the work opportunities available in NEPA, including work that does not need a 4 year college education. They hope to encourage local students to come back to this area to work.

Their programs include Youth Apprenticeships (YAPs) and career preparedness.

Debra described their career preparedness programs, which include:
  • Hospital Internships to help kids learn about going into healthcare fields after which they can go into a summer internship program for 1 week. Also, they take them to the Scranton Medical School to show that they do not have to leave the area to become doctors. They also go to a veterinary clinic to see surgeries, which they cannot do in a human hospital setting.
  • Job Shadowing – students shadow a doctor or other professionals to see what they do.
  • In-house Lecture Series – a professional comes to talk about their career and the educational pathway to that career.
  • Career Fairs – Health fairs and oil and gas industry fairs are part of this schema.
  • Business Person in the Classroom – P&G engineers go into the classroom to talk about type of jobs available in the area.
  • Higher Education Shadow Days – shadowing individuals in higher education.
  • Workplace Tours – this program includes tours of various business locations, including P&G.
  • Mentoring One-on-One with students to help with resume writing and other activities to help them think about their futures.
Shealynn then reviewed the Youth Apprenticeships History: one of the largest programs with approximately 120 students out now at worksites.  They are earning money and getting credits toward graduation. 65% of the students come from broken or needy homes.

YAP is a year-long program during the school year where students work at a site, including 25 students placed at P&G.  The benefits to the students include 1) it extends learning experience outside of the classroom, 2) it provides hands on real work experience, 3) they receive part-time pay, and 4) they earn high school credit towards graduation.

NTIEC is always looking for other worksites that are willing to take youth apprentices, so let them know if you are interested.

NTIEC has a lot of events scheduled for the current and next academic year already, with more in the planning stages.

Current Academic Year
  • May 8 vehicular career day at the Hartford Fair – open to 5th graders.
  • July 15-19 Healthcare Career Summer Experience (8-12th grades)
  • Aug 6-8 Energy & Oilfield Career Summer Experience (9-12th grades)
Next Academic Year (so far)
  • In school Healthcare lecture series
  • In school Non-Healthcare lecture series
  • Fall Hospital Internships
  • Healthcare Career Day
They need help getting the word out to the students, so please spread the word about these programs.
