Interact Club Collects Food for ‘Sack Hunger’ Initiative – Dave Wilson

During the week of March 19th, Tunkhannock Area High School, through the Interact Club, collected food for CEO (Commission on Economic Opportunity) with their ‘Sack Hunger’ initiative. Every room received a ‘sack’ to be filled with food (canned/dried goods). The class that filled the most sacks was awarded a great breakfast snack on Thursday, March 29.

CEO covers three counties and they report that 76,160 people face hunger in our region; 1 in 5 children are at risk. Congratulations to Interact and the TAHS students for making a difference in our community.

Guest Speaker:

Not One More is an organization trying to see what can be done to reduce mortality from drug overdoses in our County. Celeste lost 2 brothers to drug related issues and her son is a recovering addict, so she is very passionate and dedicated to this endeavor.

She provided a variety of handouts on drug related issues and a listing of local resources for meetings etc.

Addiction is non-discriminatory.  Geriatric addiction is now a big issue, since seniors may be over prescribed medications.

They are acquiring drug bags for safe disposal of medications to be given out to seniors to help get them to clean out the drugs from their medicine cabinets, especially if they cannot get to one of the permanent drug boxes or to the semi-annual Drug Take Back Events.

Not one more was formed to help get the word out about the drug crisis and provide info on what can be done to help ameliorate this crisis. Some addicts come from good faith homes.

Overdose patients are being dropped off at the ER and there are increasing numbers of Good Samaritan calls. There were 57 suicide calls and 5 deaths plus 99 overdose calls for Emergency services.

The Wyoming County HOPE Coalition will be keeping track of all overdoses, Narcan training etc. in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Drug Safety Program.

She is trying to get the “Steered straight” program into Tunkhannock schools.  This program was founded by ex-offender Michael DeLeon.  The program teaches kids “Don’t be a follower, be a leader”.  She is providing the info to the schools and said that Michael Donahoe and Commissioners are on board.  It is a yearlong program, kindergarten to 12th grade.
