Rotary Facts

For the next several months, this Bulletin will include an educational section to help new members and not so new members, learn about Rotary and our club.

There are 2 main documents that provide governance guidance for our Club: the Constitution and Bylaws.  The Rotary Club Constitution is authored by Rotary International (RI) and all clubs must accept the Constitution without revision. Every 3 years, the Council on Legislation of RI, considers changes to the Constitution based on recommendations from Clubs worldwide. They then issue a revised version of the Constitution, which must be accepted as written by all clubs.

The Rotary Club Bylaws are also revised every 3 years by the Council, however, each club has the right to modify the bylaws to best suit their club. The governing body of the club is the Board of Directors and the Bylaws define the roles and responsibilities of the club officers and directors.

Pdf copies of the Nov 2016 Tunkhannock Rotary Constitution and Bylaws can be downloaded from the home page of our website www.tunkhannockrotary.org from the left column under the heading “Download Files”.

Treasurer’s Report – Sandy Lane

Sandy is just back from her extended stay in Florida and did not have anything new to report.

She did ask for people, who had not already done so, to sign the books that we will be presenting to the Exchange Students after their talks over the next 2 weeks.

Secretary’s Report – Carol Ziomek

Carol was having computer issues related to Windows 10 updates, so the weekly bulletin did not get sent out until just before our meeting today.  She hopes to update the website and Facebook later today assuming the computer issues stabilize. Past District Governor Barbara Belon, who lead the process to get a Global Grant for a project in Honduras, has volunteered to help our club with the grant preparation, review and processing, but we are not yet ready for her help.

Foundation Giving – President Samantha

Please make your annual donation to the Rotary Foundation (RF) before the end of our Rotary year on June 30. There are lots of videos at Rotary.org that highlight the work of the RF and how our money is being utilized.

President Samantha then showed a polio video from RF. Although there has been a 99% reduction of wild-type polio in the world, we are still not at 100% and need support for the end game.

Old Business – President Samantha

Mike Markovitz is still working on our District Grant to buy rescue mannequins for training of Wyoming County groups and residents on CPR.

We also received thank you cards from the Dietrich Theater and the Seven Loaves Soup Kitchen

Kids are working on their earth day project this weekend.  They will also be cleaning people’s yards and cleaning up around the schools. We provided $200 for pizza and refreshments for this earth day project.

The Interactors will be participating in the Rise Against Hunger meal packing event in the high school cafeteria on Saturday, May 5 from 12:00-2:00. Along with the National Honor Society and several other school groups, they are trying to raise about $1,000 to help fund this event. You can contribute to this effort at http://events.stophungernow.org/TY.

Interact Officer elections for 2018-2019 will take place in May.

Former inbound exchange student Marco was at Boston Marathon this year.

Current inbound exchange student Vitto Sica has been doing well in tennis.  Vitto’s parents visited Tunkhannock recently.

Plant a Tree Program

RI President Ian Riseley asked each Rotary Club to commit to planting a tree for each club member before Earth Day, April 22, 2018. So far our Club has planted 10 trees in Tunkhannock to honor our Rotary military veterans and Norm Kelly has planted a tree in his yard.  In early May, we will have a tree planting day at Ron Furman’s property to complete the planting of the total of 70 trees for our 70 club members.

John Hovan then announced that he had arranged through the Arbor Day Foundation for 70 trees to be planted for $1/tree for Tunkhannock Rotary.

Culinary Institute of America Trip – Pres. Samantha for Tom Kukuchka

Final payment of $49 per person is due for the trip.  Please pay the final payment to Sandy as soon as possible. The CIA trip will be on Tuesday, May 15.

Dave Wilson pointed out that May 15 is election day and he obtained some applications to request an absentee ballot for anyone who wanted one. You can also get them at the courthouse. The last day to apply is May 8 and the last day to vote is May 11. Just mention on your application that you are traveling and will not be in the county that day. They will send the ballot to you once you send in the application.

The Special Olympics will also be going on that day, May 15.  We donate money to Special Olympics each year, so Rich Seaberg will be our attending Rotary representative.

Also our May Board of Director’s Meeting scheduled for May 15 will be rescheduled for Tuesday May 22.

Our next Meeting will be Thursday, Apr 26. Vittorio Sica, our exchange student from Italy, will be our speaker.

President Samantha Maruzzelli adjourned the meeting at 1:20 PM.

Speaker:

Jodi just returned from a week-long Conference on World Affairs, which has been going on for 70 years.  All speakers come free. This year’s emphasis was on empowering women. They also have various concerts.  The next conference will be April 9-13, 2019.

Jodi first went to Rotary with her grandfather at the Abington Rotary. He loved to sing and in those days singing was a part of each weekly meeting. Although he could not hear very well, he still loved to sing.  Sometimes, he was louder than the organ at church.

Her father then joined the Abington Rotary and took her kids to all sorts of Rotary activities.

Her children were in Interact and served as President and secretary.

Her late husband Bob loved Rotary as well and was active in our Tunkhannock Rotary. He particularly loved the sing-alongs at our Xmas luncheons.

So, it was now time for Jodi to join Rotary and she is now enjoying Rotary as well.
