At the Jun 17 Club Assembly, we will hear from Rotarians who attended the Jun 12 District Conference in Wellsboro. From some of the photos in the 2021 District Conference photo album on our Website Home page, much fun was had by all, In addition, at least one new club initiative was inspired.

Public Relations – Carol Ziomek

The club recently received an e-mail from the Rotary Club of Tartu, Estonia asking for information regarding the International Trees planted by Tunkhannock Rotary in 1939.  The trees were planted in soil received from 29 Rotary Clubs around the world. Tartu Rotary sent 1 lb of soil for the planting and wanted to know if the trees are still alive with any photos.

They also included a copy of the original letter they sent along with the soil. According to a newspaper article I found when writing the Club’s History in 2015, all the letters were bound into a volume that was placed in the School’s library.  Also, there was a plaque with the names of all the clubs that hung at the School.  If anyone knows where these items are today, please let me know, so I can include them in our 100th Year History for 2025.

George Gay found his 1959 yearbook photos in front of the 2 International Trees at the old High School.  No sign of where the bound book of letters or plaque from the school are.

Sandy Lane suggested to check with the Historical Society since some things from the old school were given to them.

Recent Trip to Haiti

Jodi has had no luck connecting with the Jacmel Rotary Club in Haiti regarding our planned Global Grant with them.  We do have the signed MOU from Jacmel, but no contact with the person who was due to oversee the project in Haiti.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Northern Hemisphere. Jodi’s group did a lot of stuff up in Northern part of Haiti on 3 projects:
  1. Mango Community Family Farm is a safe and sustainable farm to raise food crops on a 21 acre property.  They bring in tractors etc. to help the farmers in the area grow crops here.
  2. Haiti Eye Clinic in Pignon is helping people with eye issues or no vision. This includes a girl who vision loss was caused by gonorrhea in her mother with subsequent infections and individuals with cataracts that have almost completely impaired their vision.  The Clinic sees 1200 patients each year, do surgery, provide glasses etc.
  3. Days for Girls program to keep girls in school.  To attend school the girls need shoes, uniforms etc. that are too expensive, therefore boys get first preference in the family to get an education.  The program is giving the girls washable menstrual kits to keep them in school.  Educating women helps keep small businesses running and helps the economy.  Women will also pay back any microloans they receive, unlike the men.  They are trying to educate the young women as to what is going on with their bodies.
Jodi hopes to go back in Oct 2021 to build a house for the Mango Community Family Farm.  They are now building the blocks by hand in preparation for constructing the house.
