Jun 14 Rotary Meeting Highlights
Rotary Facts

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932.[1] Taylor, a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago, took charge of a Chicago-based aluminum company that was facing bankruptcy. Struggling to save the company, Taylor composed a 24-word code of ethics for all employees to follow in their business and professional lives. The code was credited with saving the company. The Four-Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943.[2]

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings.[3]

The 4-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do
1.       Is it the TRUTH?
2.      Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.      Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4.      Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Pledge and Invocation:

President Samantha Maruzzelli brought the meeting to order at 12:15 PM at Purkey’s Pink Apple with Norm Kelly reciting the 4-Way Test and leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Dave Wilson giving the Invocation.

Frank Yu 2015-2016 Inbound Exchange Student

Frank is from Taiwan, who is visiting Tunkhannock on a short 1 week visit to friends he made during his exchange. He is studying in a Community College in Seattle and will transfer to 4 year University. Frank wants to study International Business or Marketing. His parents have a business and they want him and his brother to help them out after he graduates.

Frank commented that Seattle is not as much fun as Tunkhannock, since he has to study and doesn’t have much free time. He will be doing a summer course for July & Aug, then he goes back to Taiwan at the end of Aug. It has been almost a year since he was back in Taiwan.

When he first arrived, he stayed with a host family for 6 months in Seattle (room, meals and you pay $800 per month).  He moved out 1 month ago and now rents a room in a house, is independent and he says he is a good cook.

New Paul Harris Fellow Presentation – Pres. Samantha

Rotarians can use their Foundation points to confer a Paul Harris on another person, including a fellow Rotarian.  Pres. Samantha Maruzzelli gave new Paul Harris Fellow recognition to Vice President Ryan Visneski, who has been a big help and sounding board to her during her presidency.

Harvest & Wine Festival – Ron Furman

The tickets for the Festival are now here and first sales will take place at Founder’s Day.  Online ticket sales will begin on Aug 1 and at local sites on Aug 17.  We will allow the local sites to sell tickets on Sat until they are sold out, but none will be sold at the gates.

We need help on getting sponsorships and Don Streby has turned over all the information on previous sponsorship to Terry Furman.  Terry Furman and Jennifer Williamson will help getting sponsors but we desperately need someone to volunteer to chair the sponsorship committee. Glenn Holcombe has developed a nice flyer to help with the sponsorship solicitations.

Glenn has also created signs for our exit points that tell Festival participants to contact a Rotarian or security so they can help get them a ride home if not completely sober enough to drive. However, we are not offering to drive them home just help get them a taxi or call someone to come and get them.

The next planning meeting will be July 9, instead of July 2 at the Tunkhannock Public Library at 6 PM.

Interactors - Dave Wilson

Exchange student Nico will be leaving next Thursday for his trip to Texas.  Therefore, he will not be at graduation, so he was dressed up in a graduation outfit and they celebrated his graduation in Tommasina’s Spanish class.

District News - Norm Kelly

District 7410 Jamboree - President Samantha passed around information on the District 7410 Jamboree, which will take place on July 14-15 at George Hock Park in Falls, PA.  Cost is $12.95 per person.  The BBQ cookout and live Bluegrass music will begin around 3 PM on Saturday July 14th, although the canoe trip will begin in Tunkhannock at 11 AM on Sat. Canoe rentals are available at Susquehanna Canoe and Kayak Rental (570-388-6107). The canoe trip and overnight campout are optional and all Rotarians, family, friends and anyone else can participate in all or some features of this event.

Norm reminded everyone about the Sunday July 1 District Banner Exchange and high tea that will take place at the Ramada Inn in Clark Summit at 2 PM. The event will celebrate District Governor Karin Susan Breitlauch’s year and commemorate the Installation of Roger Mattes, Jr. as District Governor.

Our next Meeting will be Thursday, June 21. Our guest speaker will be Anika Sehne who will talk about her 2016-2017 outbound exchange to France.

President Samantha Maruzzelli adjourned the meeting at 1:30 PM.

Speaker:
Mike Markovitz
Rotary Moment

President-Elect Mike introduced himself and his family, including his new grandson. He built his company Northeast Data, which now has approx. 75 employees across the US. Rotarian Dick Stark helped him when he was starting up his business.

Mike was an eagle scout and he collected clothes and toys for kids of migrant workers. It was seeing the look of happiness on the face of one of the kids with her toy that made him realize how good it felt to give to others.

He became involved in helping the Tunkhannock Ambulance Association (TAA) and learned rope rescue and scuba diving rescue. He is now an EMT and became chief and president of the TAA.

He was actually in Rotary, while it was at the Prince, for 6 months. But he was building his business at that time and could not attend meetings regularly. Since he did not want to be red-listed, he decided not to stay in Rotary.  Harry Sharpe got him to rejoin Rotary 4 yr ago.

Mike’s favorite project is Candy Cane Day, a program he has now chaired for several years. In 2017, a record amount of money was collected to buy toys for deserving, but economically disadvantaged children and foster kids in Wyoming County.

His most memorable moment was receiving his club-designated Paul Harris Fellow recognition.

Don Davis
Rotary Moment

At George Brick’s funeral, Harry Sharpe urged him to join Rotary, although he really wanted a year off since he had finished teaching and coaching.

His Rotary moment was working outside at Lazybrook unloading hay bales for the Festival. Norm commented “I thought we were in trouble when I saw your name on the list of workers”, since he thought Don would not do any work.  Then after they unloaded the hay bales, Norm told him he now realized that Don was a very hard worker and was glad he helped out.
