News for Feb 4-10

 

President Terri Detrick brought the meeting to order at 12:15 PM online via Zoom.  George Gay lead the Pledge of Allegiance, Dave Wilson gave the invocation and Mary Tempest led the first recitation of the 4-Way Test.

Francine Kanyok’s father passed away last Wednesday, keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.  The viewing is tonight and the funeral is tomorrow.

 

 

President-elect Mary Tempest, Pres. Terri Detrick, Treasurer Elaine Walker and Asst Secretary Ann Way are taking the Grants Management course.  If anyone else is interested in joining the virtual class on March 3rd from 6-7pm, please let Terri know.

 

 

We are still looking for ideas for projects for a District Grant for 2021-2022.

 

 

There will be a Flash Meeting tonight at 5:30 PM via Zoom.

 

 

Volunteers Needed for COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic – Pres. Terri Detrick and Ann Way

 

Pres. Terri and Ann Way told Gene Dziak after his talk recently that if they need help with COVID-19 vaccination clinics that Rotary would help in any way possible.  Gene contacted Ann Way and Ann offered to Gene that we would take care of the volunteer piece for post registration activities of the vaccination clinic that will be held on a Sat and Sun.  It will be at the Middle School for 8 hr each day.  They hope to administer 500 doses total.  Timing is unknown but may be around the beginning of March.

 

Ann will chair this committee with assistance from Pres. Terri, Susan Kelly, Laura Charles, Mary Tempest, Robin Rome and Sam Maruzzelli.  We can reach out to other organizations to see where we can also pull in more volunteers.

 

Carol asked about Community Outreach and mentioned that we can help with that if they want. Ann will talk with Gene and offer him our help with this as well.

 

 

Dietrich is doing a Valentine’s Cookie Fundraiser, with cookie preorders and pick up on Feb 13.  More information is on their Facebook page. 

 

 

 

 

 

The article on our donation to the Tunkhannock Public Library appeared in the Feb 3 Examiner.

 

Carol is still looking for contributors to write articles for the weekly Bulletin.

The first Festival planning meeting was Feb 1 and Ron reached out to make sure we had all necessary subcommittee chairs.  We are proceeding full steam ahead for planning for an Oct 9, 2021 Festival. 

 

 

Mike will be reaching out to his committee re the July 3^rd Fireworks.

 

 

The Rotary 4-Way Test book plates are now in the dictionaries.  Sandy Lane put together a video for the 3^rd graders, which Terri played for us.  Pres. Terri will be delivering the dictionaries to the school today.  The teachers will play the video for the children as they distribute the dictionaries.

 

 

The winner has been picked for the Essay Contest, but will be announced at a later date.

 

 

 

The Rotary Auction began Feb 1 and will run until March 14^th. You can preview and bid on the items at https://www.trellis.org/rotaryauction.  Many local items are available.

 

 

The 2022 Rotary Peace Fellowship application is now available.

 

Terri Detrick asked everyone to silently say to themselves the 4-Way Test before they go about the rest of their day.

Erica has been at the Theater since 2002. 

 

2021 is their Year of Hope.  They are looking forward to things returning to normal. 

 

20 years ago, on April 13, 2001, the Dietrich Theater reopened, so this is a banner year for them.  Little ones have seen their first movies here, grandparents have taken their grandchildren to the movies, first pots were made on pottery wheels and seniors were doing chair yoga. There have also been lots of incredible experiences for students, who have various physical and mental challenges over the last 20 year.

 

Currently, they are operating at 10% capacity, with CDC and PA DOH guidelines being followed and now showing new films.  They were in the middle of the Mini-Fest, when the snowstorm hit so it has been extended to next week.

 

Tom and Jerry for children will be coming soon and Hidden Figures will be shown for black history month.

 

Many of their classes are continuing virtually and in person.  Approximately 40 people have been taking the chair yoga online, versus the 25 when classes were in person.  In addition, the homebound participants can take multiple classes each week.

 

Upcoming is a virtual meditative art experience with Dr. Mary Murphy Fox. 

 

They also have in person art classes with 2 sessions of pottery and mixed media. 

 

Veterans meet up later in the month.

 

In Spring, they will partner with the Tunkhannock Public Library for Wyoming County Reads featuring Ernest Hemingway’s works, “The Old Man and the Sea” and “A Farewell to Arms”.  Then they will be showing the movies at the Dietrich.

The Dietrich will be working with HANDS to bring a virtual puppet show and a virtual puppet making workshop.

 

They will also partner with local educators where they pair a fun movie with an educator.  This year it will be Jaws with a professor from Misericordia University.

 

They need community support to keep the Dietrich open and many of the programs going.

 

 

Ann Way asked is there is any thought to a hybrid Chair Yoga once all goes back to normal?  They may consider offering it 3 times a week, 2 virtual and 1 in person might be possible. Unfortunately, the internet signal is not always reliable in the Theater (Susan Kelly suggested a signal booster).  It serves a need in the community for the seniors.  More people can take part now.  Great that it is free. It provides seniors with a human connection and seniors felt their week was more structured and varied with it.

 

Prior to the Meeting, Pres. Terri Detrick popped over to the Dietrich to present our donation for $3,000 to the Dietrich Theater.  The check was accepted by Erica Rogler and Mary Turner.
